Strangest Phones Ever Made By Nokia


Nokia designed some good but strange-looking devices in this period.

The former cell phone hulk is no more, as this giant industry continues to shift away from designing mobile devices to developing networking gear.  Ever since the company has prevent from returning to mobile making in the future, now it’s the best time to look back at its design heyday.

During the years of 2000’s when mobile devices were the must have gadget, Nokia would surprise its customer base every week with a new design – sometimes with traditional or astound phone with variety and delightful shapes.

However they weren’t the most popular devices Nokia had.  For instance the Nokia 7600 was squareish device with round croner’s with jewel design, as defined by some.  But it seemed silly to hold, make alone to call with.  And sold in low thousands.



Nokia 3650 was one of the more traditional with bold design, reimagined with an older rotary dial pad.  Wasn’t the most popular device the company ever made but the props made by the designers were something eccentric.



Nokia devices were designed to have core function like gaming or music devices.

It was a good time. It was a different time. So, why not relive it?

An IT Wire story published on the 8th of September is suggesting that Android may be becoming the target of choice for malware authors over Windows.

There is a lot of ways that you can parse the meaning of the data cited in the IT Wire story, with some reasonable and some unreasonable conclusions being drawn by commentators on social media.



It’s long been hypothesized that the reason that malware infections on Windows were more prevalent than on other platforms was due to the greater market share of the Windows OS. I suspect that this theory is being borne out. The rise in market share of Android has been accompanied by a rise in the amount of malware targeting the platform. As more and more people use Android devices, malware authors are going to spend more time coming up with ingenious ways of exploiting the platform.

Microsoft had to go back to the drawing board after the release of Windows XP to start to stem the flood of malware. It took rebuilding Windows from the ground up, which impacted many existing applications, to develop a newer, more hardened, version of Windows. It’s likely that Android will similarly need to be rebuilt form the ground up (with all the fun that brings to existing application compatibility (just look at Vista) to similarly stem what appears to be an increasing tide of nefarious software targeting the platform. Part of the reason that malware is becoming more prevalent is the rise in use of the platform, part of it is due to vulnerabilities inherent in the platform. All platforms have inherent vulnerabilities, more so if they aren’t built from the ground up with security in mind.

In terms of managing things from the Enterprise perspective. Organizations came up with strategies to deal with malware on computers. However, for many organizations, Endpoint Protection considerations don’t include anything beyond client computers. This is going to need to change as mobile devices, including those running the Android OS, are increasingly going to be used to access sensitive internal organizational resources. A future Endpoint Protection strategy needs to pay as much attention to mobile malware as it does traditional desktop malware.

They need to do this because people are increasingly using mobile devices to perform critical job functions. And organizations need to find some way to allow a class of device that’s increasingly susceptible to malware infection to access to sensitive resources in a way that doesn’t compromise those resources.

In the past few years we’ve seen a swing away from security towards convenience when it comes to providing resource access to mobile devices. If the rate of malware growth on mobile platforms increases, it’s likely that we’ll see a swing back towards restricting access so that it is only granted to trusted devices.


Until we get anti-malware on mobile right, that’s going to be quite a mountain to climb.

Anyone who's used a HTC phone will be familiar with the tailor-made Android skins and apps that come loaded the handset, but now the company wants to push them out into the wider Android landscape.

According to Recode, HTC has a 260-people-strong unit called HTC Creative Labs, which is working to develop apps for other Android phones.

Its first task is to create an Android-friendly version of Zoe, the HTC app that is able to compile 16 pictures or videos into a neat little highlight video - something that HTC said would happen when it launched the M8.

That will arrive this week, but only for high-end handsets running Android 4.4. Other apps, including Blinkfeed, are expected to follow down the line.

If you haven't managed to get your hands on the Xiaomi Mi 3 despite several attempts on Flipkart, don't be disappointed. The Rs 13,999-priced smartphone is available on eBay, Quikr and OLX through a number of resellers, though at sharply higher prices. A search on online retail platforms threw up several sellers across the country, including Mumbai, Delhi, Surat, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad, offering sealed or unopened Mi 3 handsets at prices ranging between Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000. One, though, was being sold at the original price late Tuesday.

Xiaomi, the popular Chinese handset vendor, concluded its fifth flash sale on Tuesday where it sold 20,000 devices within 2.3 seconds, leaving the majority of the 100,000 people who had registered to buy the phone on Flipkart, high and dry. The next sale will begin August 26, for which registrations started at 6 pm Tuesday.

Xiaomi has an exclusive agreement with Flipkart to sell the Mi 3 devices only through the e-commerce website. But with demand far exceeding supply, resellers are making a killing. Manu Jain, India's head of operations for Xiaomi, told ET the company is requesting these sites to try to take down such ads, but admitted that it would not be able to do anything legally to stop people from reselling the phone.

"We can't legally stop them from selling it (Mi 3) after buying, but we're working with Flipkart to put some checks and balances in place," he said. For instance, Mi 3 purchases have been restricted to one device a person per week so that the same person cannot buy multiple devices, he added.

Jain added that Xiaomi is trying to increase the number of units put up for sale, which at the moment is only 20 per cent of demand. "We underestimated the demand, but we're trying to ramp up production. It will take us a few more weeks to do so, but future quantities will be significantly higher."

Including this week's sale, Xiaomi has sold 75,000 phones, a fraction of the exponentially growing Indian smartphone market, which is expected to cross 80 million devices this year, almost double the 44 million sold in 2013.

Some smartphone buyers, frustrated with the limited Mi 3 quantities put up for sale, opted for rival devices Moto G and Asus Zenfone 5, according to posts on Xiaomi's Facebook page. "I will be going to buy another phone, I can't wait more — this is third time in a row for me," said Sudhindra Sen on Xiaomi's official local page called Mi India.

The Motorola and Asus devices are available at lower prices than the Mi 3. Motorola recently reduced the price of the Moto G by Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,999 for the 8 GB version and Rs 11,999 for the 16 GB version. The 8 GB version of the Asus Zenfone 5 is available for Rs 10,000.

Both Xiaomi and Motorola follow the online-only sales model, making them direct competitors online, while they compete offline with large MNC players Samsung, Apple and Sony, apart from Indian companies such as Micromax, Karbonn and Lava. According to IDC, Samsung leads the smartphone market with a 29 per cent share, with Indian handset makers together taking up 32 per cent.

Mac computers can’t get viruses: Yes, Apple computers are susceptible to malware too. Apple used to brag its computers aren't vulnerable to PC viruses, but the company quickly changed its marketing page after a Trojan affected thousands of Mac computers in 2012.

Private/Incognito browsing keeps you anonymous: There’s a misconception that “incognito” and “private” are synonymous with anonymous. If you’re using Incognito Mode in Google Chrome or private browsing in Safari, it simply means the browser won’t keep track of your history, import your bookmarks, or automatically log into any of your accounts. It won’t keep your identity anonymous — so keep that in mind if you’re visiting sites you shouldn't be.

Leaving your phone plugged in destroys the battery: If you’re like most people, you probably leave your phone plugged in overnight long after the battery is fully charged. Some used to say this would hurt your phones battery life, but in fact, there’s no proof that this damages your phone’s battery in any way. Modern smartphones run on lithium-ion batteries, which are smart enough to stop charging when they've reached capacity.

More megapixels always mean a better camera: What’s the difference between 12 megapixels cameras and 8 megapixel cameras? Not much, as it turns out. The quality of an image is determined by how much light the sensor is able to take in. Typically, bigger sensors come with larger pixels and the larger the pixel the more light it can absorb. Don’t charge your phone unless it’s almost dead: This, too, is a popular myth about lithium-ion batteries. It’s not harmful to plug your phone in before the battery is drained — in fact, it may be better for your battery. Batteries have a limited number of charge cycles before they lose their ability to hold a charge. A charge cycle consists of charging your battery back up to its full capacity when it’s out of juice. The reason your phone’s battery life diminishes as it gets older is because it’s already used up many of its cycles, not because you’re plugging it in when the battery is already half full.

Higher display resolution is always better on a smartphone: Some have argued that at a certain point, screen resolution doesn’t matter on a smartphone. Gizmodo cites experts in saying the human eye can discern nitty-gritty detail when a display packs more than 300 pixels per inch. Earlier this year, LG unveiled its first quad-HD smartphone, the G3, which has a resolution of 2560 x 1440. That’s much higher than the average high-end smartphone, which usually comes with a 1920 x 1080 resolution display. But it’s unclear if those numbers really matter after a certain point, since the eye can   discern individual pixels beyond a certain resolution. So when I tested the G3s display alongside the 1080 Galaxy S5s display, there was hardly a difference in terms of sharpness — that’s why companies like Apple tend to focus on brightness, more so than ultra-dense displays.

It’s bad to use your iPad charger for your iPhone: This one is a little trickier than a standard yes or no answer. Apple’s official website says its 12-watt iPad adapter can charge both the iPhone and the iPad. However, Steve Sandler, founder and chief technical officer at electronics analysis company AEi Systems, told Popular Mechanics that this could stress your iPhone’s battery over time if you do it regularly. It would take about a year, however, to notice any changes in battery efficiency.

You shouldn't shut down your computer every day: While some may believe it’s harmful to shut down your computer every night, the truth is it’s actually good to turn off your computer regularly. It’s easy to get into the habit of putting your laptop in sleep mode so you can easily return to it without having to boot up. But, as Life hacker points out, shutting it down when not in use conserves power and places less stress on its components, which could enable it to last longer.
